Tragedy at farm ends in son Sylvester Vanderham’s death

A hunting accident at a farm east of Son Township left Sylvester Vanderham dead after a 22 caliber rifle discharged while an outing for ice cream with his father. Vanderham, 23, of Akron, had moved with his parents to the township years ago. He was married to Miss Madeline and leaves a wife and 3 year old son Johnny, plus parents and grandparents. Services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with interment in the local Catholic cemetery.

Mrs Chas Burnight Visits Sister in Sioux Falls

Mrs Chas Burnight visited her sister Mrs M Redmond in Sioux Falls during the latter part of the week. The short trip gathered local chatter and followed Mrs Redmond’s recent house repairs.

Death of Mrs Anna Miller of Johnson Township

Mrs Anna Miller wife of J G Miller of Johnson township died Saturday afternoon after long illness from diabetes. Born Atina Siebens in Aurich Germany September 27 4 She came to the United States in 1881 with parents living first at Minonk then LeMars Iowa. Married October 25 1898 at St John Evangelical church LeMars. Survived by husband three sons Abraham Rilert George and a daughter Mrs Arthur Gronmeyer five grandchildren two granddaughters and numerous siblings. Funeral Tuesday at home 130 PM and 200 PM at Plymouth Presbyterian church Rev R I Aneee and Rev T C Plymouth church conducted.

Sugar rationing schedule for Akron area residents announced

Hid Lawless of Beresford Paul Erickson of Alcester and Farisa Webber of Bik Point outline sugar canning rationing dates and places for nearby residents. Scheduled sites include West Union school Alcester district and Spink with times in mid August. Rationing rules cap at 80 quarts per person and 65 pounds total for a typical family depending on prior allotments and planned canning output.

Union Creek Church Picnic Near Akron Saturday August 20

The annual Union Creek Church picnic will be held on church grounds five and a half miles northwest of Akron next Thursday August 20. Everyone is invited to enjoy the event with a 5:30 chicken supper served until finished. A speaker and a musical program will headline the evening entertainment.

Miss Dorothy Jean Baldwin went to Sioux City yesterday to visit relatives. Mrs. Garl Gale and daughter Lavada visited relatives in Sioux City last week. Mrs. Harry Hodoway left yesterday to visit daughter Helene in Omaha. Miss Sylvia Hummel of Jefferson 8. D. was the guest of Harriet Swanson. Baseball on Akron grounds Sunday at 2 30 p m Mann's of Sioux City vs Akron. See this last game. Mr. and Mrs. I L Burrill and Geo. Ross left yesterday to attend the national Eagles convention in Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Martin Conway and daughter Camilla of Sioux City visited the Stecker home. Mrs. Nettie Hilliker and Mrs. B A Adams and daughter Lois left for California. Sgt. Donald Waterbury, aviation corps, stationed near Meridian Miss, arrived to spend a furlough with relatives. Mrs. Alice Campbell went to Sioux City for a visit with her son in law and daughter and granddaughter Alice Clementson. Relatives came to attend Otto Post's burial in Riverside cemetery. Rev. Oscar F. Bohman moved his family here from Spencer and will reside near the Masonic Temple while serving as army chaplain. A former pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Akron, Bohman resigned as pastor of Bethesda Spencer after five years. He has been commissioned a first lieutenant and left for Harvard University to report to the army head chaplain. He served as a private in World War I. He is a member of Glen Pederson American Legion Spencer.

Scrap drive opens in Plymouth county for war salvage

Five government trucks arrive in Akron to collect farm scrap metal rubber rags rope burlap bags and more from Plymouth county farms as part of the national salvage program. County and township chairs organize the drive to harvest scrap for war needs including steel rubber and tin while stressing duty to support soldiers.

Plymouth County Show to Highlight 4 H Pageant and Demonstrations

Plymouth County 4 H Girls and Boys Club Show and Achievement Day will be next week in LeMars on August 19 and 20. An opening night pageant at the outdoor amphitheatre features the state pageant elements and an honorary Clover chain ceremony. Demonstrations on home furnishings will run August 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in a park tent, with seven 25 minute shows by fourteen girls from seven clubs, covering curtains, dressing tables, and craft projects using available materials.

Sioux Valley Junior Farm Show and Harvest Celebration Held

The second annual Sioux Valley Farm Show and Harvest Celebration drew a sizable crowd Tuesday with fair entries across departments notably in the women’s and 4H girls’ division. Weather was perfect and Akron beat Yankton 7 to 6 in a baseball exhibition amid rides, street acts, and a bowery dance headlined by Johnny Koch and his Sioux City band.
