Mr. and Mrs. Chas Bertrand of Spink South Dakota were toasted Friday evening July 28 as about fifty neighbors and relatives marked their golden wedding. Death comes to Pioneer Union County woman
Jennie E Leafstedt, longtime Union county resident, died July 21 1950 at Hawarden Hospital after five weeks illness. Born July 26 1871 in Lawrence Kansas she lived 76 years in Union county, later residing in Alcester. Funeral July 24 at Big Springs Baptist church. Survivors include four children, six grandchildren, a sister and many friends.

Akron and Vermillion played a makeup bout with Vermillion winning 7 to 5. Drews hit a second consecutive homer for Akron, and a rogue ball rebound off a gas drum was ruled a fair home run after umpires reviewed the play. Cingolani toed the mound for Akron while Liffridge relieved late for Vermillion as the Eagles built a late lead and held on.

Kenny Foundation polio fund drive starts August 21
Ueta Sigma Phi sorority led by Miss Irene Ortmann and Miss Dorothy Moser of LeMars will sponsor the annual Elizabeth Kenny Foundation polio fund appeal in Plymouth county starting Monday, August 21. Mrs. George Eason of LeMars, 1919 Plymouth county chairman, will assist and the committee includes Rev. Edward D. Rapp and Dr. Dwight C. Wirt as co chairmen with Mrs. Margaret Hinderman of Wapello in charge of Lews women's activities. The Kenny treatment is administered in Des Moines at Raymond Blank Memorial Hospital and the Kenny Institute in Minneapolis offers care to Iowa polio patients regardless of race or ability to pay. A pledge of humanitarian effort is made as polio outbreaks rise nationally. Ortmann will be assisted by Beta Sigma Phi sorority members.
