Thirsty Land California Canal Project Moves Water 500 Miles
California’s Central Valley project readies first full integrated operation from August 1 to 10. The vast federal irrigation plan stores water at the northern tip and transports it 500 miles to parched farms across Red Bluff Tracy Mendota Lindsay and Walnut Creek. The valley supports 1.5 million people with irrigated crops and livestock. Col Robert Marshall championed the concept in 1891 and the plan evolved through state water efforts to federal aid in 1935 with construction starting in 1937 under Walker R. Young.
