Cancer Society crusade aims to curb disease in Plymouth County

Last year seven times more Towns died of cancer than traffic accidents. The American Cancer Society plans research service and education to conquer cancer, including a door to door fundraising crusade during April Cancer Control Month. Plymouth County kick off is April 6 led by Rev. Alvern Kinrade with Norris Hawkins as treasurer and area chairmen across towns including Westfield Akron LeMars Remsen and Kingsley. Township and town chairmen coordinates are listed for western Plymouth county communities.

Plymouth County Corn Champion Named in 1958 Contest

Leland Sargisson of Kingsley won high honors in Plymouth County for the 1958 National Selected Five Acre DeKalb Corn Growing Contest. His yield reached 133.01 bushels per acre with DeKalb Variety 423. Each county winner received an engraved County Championship plaque. Awards are presented locally.

Farmers compete in longstanding contest drawing thousands

The event entered its twenty first year drawing nearly six thousand entries. Farmers from thirty eight states and Canada took part. Other county growers with strong yields include Raymond Anderson of Merrill Daryl Taylor of Westfield and Roman Sitzman of Kingsley.

Bowling Results and Lutheran Conference at Fort Dodge

Portland Homemakers Bake Off At Marie Wilken Home

The Portland Homemakers met March 10 at Marie Wilken’s with 14 members and five children. Charlotte Koch led the baking contest. winners included Regina Popken and Marie Wilken for angel food and sponge cake, plus unbaked and baked cheese cakes. Mrs Lund spoke on New Fabrics and Label Reading. A Des Moines April 7 Legislator meeting trip from LeMars was planned, with the next meeting set for Maxine Gerrietts’ home on April 14.

Milwaukee Road tax vouchers paid to Iowa counties

Treasurers in 66 Iowa counties receive up to $11,139.25 for Plymouth County as the first installment of The Milwaukee Road 1958 property tax totaling 1,348,050.57 for the year. Half goes to Iowa schools. the rest funds local and state services, highways, and airports.
