Aiken Educator Seeks NCLB Flexibility in Washington Trip
Dr. David Mathis of Aiken School District joined six South Carolina educators on a Washington trip to press for flexibility and multiple measures in the No Child Left Behind Act reauthorization. He urged a diagnostic test and classroom assessments beside state proficiency standards, noting uneven benchmarks across states. He met with Rep. Gresham Barrett and reported a favorable reception but warned of a future political fight over school accountability policies.
