New federal field office opens at Savannah River Site
A new federal field office will take over management of the Savannah River Site starting Sunday. The office, part of the National Nuclear Security Administration, will oversee nuclear defense missions and plans to dispose of surplus weapons materials. It will supervise proposed $14 billion plutonium plants and tritium facilities with a combined annual budget around $170 million and 1,000 plus workers. The director position is vacant. the office will report to John Gordon or another senior NNSA official rather than the Energy Department manager.
