Cardinal Mindszenty of Hungary arrived in Rome after 15 years in exile at the Budapest U S diplomatic mission. He fled Hungary in 1956 during the uprising and had been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Communists for opposing their takeover.
Veteran diplomat W Averell Harriman 79 wed Pamela Digby Churchill Hayward 51 in a private ceremony at St Thomas More church New York Monday. Guests included Mrs Mortimer, a Harriman daughter, and Mrs Charles Moore, the bride's sister.
North Vietnamese troops staged a half dozen assaults along the South Vietnam Cambodia border on the third day of a offensive Saigon says has produced over 400 casualties on both sides. Saigon reports 230 North Vietnamese deaths in three days, many by U S and South Vietnamese air and artillery.
Dr. Paul Dudley White, the Boston heart specialist who treated President Eisenhower, arrives in Hong Kong after ending a 12 day visit to Communist China. He is accompanied by another American heart specialist.
The United States and Soviet Union presented a revised draft treaty to outlaw germ warfare. Early signals indicate strong support at the United Nations General Assembly. The draft calls for destruction of biological weapon stockpiles and marks a major disarmament step since the Geneva conference opened in March 1962.
Former Supreme Court Justice Hugo La Fayette Black was buried at Arlington Memorial Cemetery beside his first wife after services at Washington Cathedral. The 85 year old jurist, noted for his broad readings of the Constitution, helped expand liberty for all Americans.
A 97 foot high water tank collapsed at a Texarkana site pouring a million gallons of water onto 30 workers. Six men were killed and 13 injured as the tank, designed for a second tank foundation, toppled into the pit during cement work.
The Navy will push a new 6,000 mile range sea launched missile system called USMS, skipping a cheaper Poseidon Polaris upgrade. Pentagon sources say the plan seeks funds for developing a new submarine class capable of deploying the system, with an estimated cost of 12 to 15 billion dollars.
President Nixon hosted a Monday night celebration for Mamie Eisenhower, praising her as a great lady and presenting a scholarship fund for Eisenhower College. The event featured performances by Ettel Merman and Lawrence Welk, a 75th birthday cake, and a rare press conference by Mrs Eisenhower.
Loretta Lynn will headline the United Way campaign kickoff labeled Loretta Lynn Day for the United Way. The $50 prize for Aiken Standard's football contest was split between Jack Curry and Carston Hudgins after each missed only two of 15 games and both tied at 48 on the tie breaker. Seven other contestants were close with two misses and tie breakers from 38 to 47.
The South Carolina House recalled to address reapportionment and billboard controls as the Senate watches. Three Senate bills arrive. one redraws six congressional districts, one regulates highway billboards, and a minor Senate amendment realigns a House bill. The billboard measure aims to secure federal road aid of about 4.5 million dollars by year end. A Senate delegation travels to Washington for federal approval talks.
FBI reports all money taken from the Bankers Trust Co branch was recovered after a wrecked car pursued by Batesburg police. The driver, Jack L. Maddox, 44, of Augusta, Ga., died. a bank officer was struck with a pistol and left in a garden area as the lone gunman fled. The robber matched a description from a December 13 holdup at the same bank.
The Rev. Walter M. Crowe of Camden was elected moderator of the fall session. About 68 commissioners from 34 churches attended the opening worship, with the Rev. Herbert Bailey of Columbia delivering the sermon. The 1972 benevolence budget of 314 731 was recommended, allocating 106 243 to the General Assembly, 101 488 to the South Carolina Synod, and 107 000 to the local Presbytery. Commissioners to the General Assembly were chosen, two per church, a minister and a layman.
City Council approved 350 from promotional funds to cover brochure printing for the Greater Aiken Chamber. A Highland Park Avenue one way proposal faced resident opposition as council plans reverse parking near the country club and narrow a sidewalk to fix traffic. Election plans for mayor and three councilmen, scheduled for Nov 2 with registration open until Oct 2, were approved for study alongside a hangar facility request at Aiken Municipal Airport.
About 50 black elected officials and strategists met secretly in Northlake to form the National Assembly for a Black Political Strategy in 72. They plan regional gatherings, five committees, and a push for black voices in the Democratic Party ahead of the 1972 convention, with a single black presidential candidate as a possibility.
The Navy reports a seeding attack on Ginger using silver iodide pellets in the Atlantic. Project Storm Fury mapped a second seeding attempt about 70 to 90 miles northeast of the storm center. Spokesman Herb Lieb said five seeding runs were planned for the day.
