The Labor Department reports a 0.6 percent rise in consumer prices in August 1978 driven by housing and medical costs. Food prices edged up 0.2 percent while grocery prices were flat. egg and fresh fruit costs increased, and gas and electricity trimmed gains.
Mrs. Irene K. Rudnick of Aiken, challenging C. Marshall Cain for state House seat 85, urged public election of Public Service Commission members and stressed quality education and a balanced budget. She cited high utility bills as a major issue and highlighted her six years in the House.

President Anastasio Somoza accepted a U S offer to mediate peace talks with opponents in Nicaragua. The move followed a 90 minute meeting with U S ambassador William Jorden as Somoza refused to resign before 1981. Opposition groups and business leaders discussed boycott options amid waning support.
