President Ford invites congressional leaders to a White House briefing on foreign aid as Congress debates cutting military assistance to Turkey. Defense Minister Isik says Turkey can proceed without aid and remains committed to its Cyprus policy.
In Argentina leftist guerrillas target military officials with bullets and bombs, bringing the death toll to 20 in 10 days. The People's Revolutionary Army threatens indiscriminate reprisals after guerrillas were executed as prisoners. Congress member Hector Sandler calls for US Embassy CIA activity to be investigated.
The California Supreme Court accepted Richard M Nixon's resignation from the State Bar in an order signed by Chief Justice Donald Wright. The court said the resignation is accepted without prejudice to any future disciplinary case if Nixon seeks to rejoin the bar.
At a Civic Center meeting in New Ellenton about the police chief dispute Mayor Carl Langley defended the city council stance to hire Hubert Walters as chief. He confirmed Acting Chief Joe Williams remains suspended with pay and pledged to follow the law and closed sessions for personnel matters.
Conrad Hartzog Aiken County Democratic vice chairman will meet with executive committee members at the Hilton Town House in Columbia today at 4 p.m. Rep Irenee Rudnick said Hartzog would attend in her place as she observes Yom Kippur. She noted party leaders prefer a primary but a convention may be needed if time runs out. She backs nominating W J Bryan Dorn due to strong Aiken County support during the July primaries.
In Columbia three federal judges will hear arguments on whether South Carolina residency requirements for governor violate equal protection. The dispute centers on Charles D. Ravenel who was party nominee until the state Supreme Court ruled he had not met the five year residency. He is Charleston born but lived in other states until 1972.
The husband and father of an Aiken family is missing after the Honduras hurricane last Thursday, with up to 7000 feared dead. Pedro Franciso De Cossio, an export rep for Southeastern Equipment in Augusta, was last heard at the American Consulate in Tegucigalpa on Sept 18. His wife and four children, living in Aiken, have no word and seek any contact through officials and aid groups.
A congressional subcommittee pressed the Ford administration for details on funding to equip Nixon's San Clemente staff with 77 typewriters along with 2 sofas 44 desks and 186 chairs The GSA head could not confirm the number of typists and noted possible temporary loan staff and volunteers.
The Senate plans to take up a bill to return the nation to standard time during four winter months. The measure, passed by the House, would set clocks back one hour on the last Sunday in October and forward one hour on the last Sunday in February. Daylight Saving Time began January 6, 1974, to save energy and reduced electrical energy use by about one percent, mainly in March and April, per a Transportation Department study.
Reports say threats were made against most or all Kennedy children. FBI and Secret Service dispatched to guard the family as an investigation is opened. A spokesman for Senator Edward Kennedy confirmed the threat and noted Treasury Secretary William Simon authorized protection. FBI officials would not confirm details.
