Former chief pleads guilty to shooting during hunting trip

Harvey Hap Pitcher former New Ellenton Police Chief pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for firing a fatal 30.06 rifle shot during a Bamberg County deer hunt on November 15 1997. Judge Marc Westbrook gave a suspended five year sentence five years probation six months house arrest and a firearm possession ban citing his health conditions and expertise as factors.

Volunteers repair home for Project Vision effort

Seventeen volunteers from Burns and Roe Engineering, the Department of Energy, the Camber Corporation and Westinghouse helped Annette Brown of New Ellenton as part of United Way's Project Vision. They planned a one day overhaul including porch screens painting plumbing electrical work and drainage. If unfinished they will return to finish the tasks.

High court to take on video poker in South Carolina

South Carolina Supreme Court agreed to decide before the November 2 referendum whether video gambling is constitutional. The court rejected PedroLand Inc. bid to join as a defendant but allowed a friend of the court brief. The outcome could shape regulations for a $255 billion annual industry and its proposed payout limits.

Social Security to mail 125 million annual statements

The Social Security Administration will begin mailing personalized annual statements to 125 million working Americans starting Oct. 1. The four page statements show each year’s earnings subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes and project future benefits, aiding retirement planning.
