Gregg and Vaucluse Mill Highlight South Cotton History

Gregg’s early cotton industry influence ties to the Vaucluse Mill in Aiken County, one of South Carolina’s first successful cotton ventures. Research credits Gregg as key to Southern mill development, noting Vaucluse’ s 1833 incorporation and 1832 factory site on a former burned mill, reflecting the era’s peak industry growth.

Vaucluse Mill's turbulent origin to Graniteville ownership

The Vaucluse textile venture in Aiken faced early mismanagement and debt before William Gregg revitalized it. He doubled output, cleared debts, and later sold to John Bauskett and George McDuffie. After multiple transfers and a 1867 fire, Graniteville Co. rebuilt the mill in 1878 and expanded its operation, ranking among South Carolina's top cotton mills by 1880. Gregg's later investors included Gen. James Jones and 2,500 acres.
