Parent cites travel issues at board meeting
The Aiken County School Board will weigh restoring bus service for a 14 year old to Midland Valley High School after it was canceled with no notice on the second day of school. Deputy Superintendent David Carver said state rules require a route to be hazardous before transportation is provided for students living within 1.5 miles. Wade lives 0.8 miles away. board members say safety remains the priority while considering the broader implications. The meeting also reviewed the McKinney Vento Homeless Act data showing 165 identified homeless students in the county this year, down from 565 last year, with two thirds in inadequate shelter and one third in shelters, hotels, motels, or cars. The board approved a framework for the Education Capital Sales and Use Tax Committee to oversee potential capital projects if the referenda passes in November.
