NFL players remain off the field as a strike continues with unions and league officials engaging in talks. No games or schedules are announced while negotiations proceed and players seek concessions on pay benefits and safety.
Washington AP reports home computer hobbyists campaign against FCC plan to levy access charges on computer networks. QuantumLink and CompuServe have mobilized subscribers to contact FCC officials and Congress with thousands of letters, totaling about 4200 letters. An FCC attorney joined the online activity to explain the proposed charges aimed at users.
A New Jersey appeals court ruled that boys can be barred from girls teams to prevent dominance and protect roster spots. Charles Carney, 16, was kept off the Cumberland Regional High School field hockey squad after previously playing on the girls junior varsity, with the state education office citing injury risk and potential intimidation or displacement of girls.

Ron B Bolton president of The Bolton Group reveals three projects for Aiken at Kiwanis Club: Springtree Villas on Pine Log Road with 128 garden apartments and full amenities on 11 acres, Northside Plaza expansion adding six stores and 20 000 square feet, and Park Avenue Executive Centre a 25000 square foot office building at 419 Park Ave downtown. The projects total about 7.6 million dollars and aim to create around 100 new jobs.
Two former Aiken residents rise as top campaign directors for Democratic candidate Richard Gephardt and Republican George Bush. William Carrick leads Gephardt’s effort while Lee Atwater oversees Bush’s nationwide drive. Both men bring long campaign experience including the 1974 South Carolina lieutenant governor contest.
Lee Atwater credits a Snickers bar and his Aiken upbringing with fueling a path to national political leadership. He recalls meeting Sen. Strom Thurmond during Halloween as a child and later worked on Thurmond campaigns before rising to campus voter organizing and national positions in the Republican Party.
Aiken native William A. Carrick, USC graduate and campaign manager for Rep. Richard Gephardt, has traveled through Georgia, Iowa, Texas, California, Florida, New Hampshire, Vermont, and South Carolina in recent months. He previously worked for Sen. Edward Kennedy and continued in politics after Kennedy's 1988 decision. Carrick began his state party work at USC under Don Fowler and ran Kennedy's 1980 South Carolina presidential campaign.
