Exxon knew Hazelwood drinking issues before Valdez disaster
Federal prosecutors say Exxon was aware since 1985 that Captain Joseph Hazelwood suffered episodic alcohol abuse and dysthymia. They allege Exxon failed to monitor him after a 1985 sobriety treatment, allowing continued drinking on duty up to the 1989 spill that dumped over 11 million gallons of oil and caused extensive wildlife deaths.
