Iran denies release of 52 hostages amid Iran Iraq fighting

The Associated Press reports Iran denies Baghdad radio claim that 52 American hostages were released. State Department officials say there is no confirmation. Fighting escalates as Iraqi ground forces invade and Iran conducts air raids on nine targets in Iraq.

SRP Purchases Draw Albany Rivalry Over South Carolina Merchants

The Savannah River Plant spends about 9.7 million in South Carolina in first half of 1980 with Aiken County receiving 1.7 million and Augusta merchants claiming 8 million. The plant bids purchases, buys American made goods, and mainly pays local vendors though 4 percent sales tax on SC bids disadvantages South Carolina firms. In 1979 SRP employed about 8,200 with 62 percent or 100 million of payroll spent in Aiken County and total SC payroll around 139 million.

Inflation Up 0.7 Percent in August Driven by Food and Cars

The Labor Department reports consumer prices rose 0.7 percent in August after a July unchanged reading. Food costs surged 2.3 percent with meats up 4.1 percent and egg prices up 6.6 percent, while new and used car prices climbed 1.7 and 2.3 percent respectively. Transportation also rose 0.9 percent as public transit and airline fares jumped, and housing costs edged up 0.1 percent.

Millbrook Baptist Church Puppeteers directed by Anita Tatum perform during Aiken's Makin in downtown Aiken. The six member group rehearses weekly for skits to be shown at church services and local events. The festival runs Thursday to Saturday with displays along Park Avenue and Laurens Street.
