SRP Purchases Draw Albany Rivalry Over South Carolina Merchants
The Savannah River Plant spends about 9.7 million in South Carolina in first half of 1980 with Aiken County receiving 1.7 million and Augusta merchants claiming 8 million. The plant bids purchases, buys American made goods, and mainly pays local vendors though 4 percent sales tax on SC bids disadvantages South Carolina firms. In 1979 SRP employed about 8,200 with 62 percent or 100 million of payroll spent in Aiken County and total SC payroll around 139 million.
