Doris C. Gravat Detention Center, a $15 million facility opened less than three months ago, struggles with under staffing and a rising inmate population from 230 to 317. Detention Director John Rowley asks area police to limit admissions and handle certain offenses via tickets or magistrate court to ease crowding.
Aiken County faces staffing and capacity concerns as the Doris C. Gravat Detention Center on Wire Road opens. The facility, built to replace the Hampton Avenue jail, can house 350 staff and 500 inmates with expansion, but current staffing limits hinder full operation amid inmate overflow from the former site.
Ticket sales soar as crowds tour the new Newberry Street facility in downtown Aiken. Angie Fitzgerald, publicity chair, calls the open house a terrific success with over 250 people attending Saturday's event, showcasing productions inspired by Sondheim Wilde and Williams.
The Aiken community bought season memberships for the new theater on Newberry Street as volunteers finish final preparations for the debut. ACP president Phil Porter notes ongoing work since July while Angie Fitzgerald says volunteers paint, assemble equipment, and handle tasks each weekend, countering talk of a turnkey operation.
