Aiken County Advances Beaulieu Carpet Plant Project

The Aiken County Council, by second reading, approves an ordinance enabling the county administrator to pursue actions to site Beaulieu of America Inc.’s $85 million yarn plant near Interstate 20. They authorize $750,000 in bonds for 40 acres, seek $1.2 million in governor’s grants, and plan a joint industrial park with Barnwell County to capture tax credits and 30 year abatements for the facility expected to employ about 350 workers and invest up to $100 million within five years.

The Aiken County Council approved unanimously a resolution backing Palmetto Cablevision’s plan to seek a waiver so local subscribers can view Columbia TV stations. Palmetto serves thousands but cannot carry Columbia network programs due to territorial rights enforced by Augusta channels.

County backs tax recovery effort on Clearwaters plant

Aiken County Council approved 7-1 a resolution backing the Forefeited Land Commission in recouping more than 366000 in back taxes for 1989 and 1980 from the bankrupt Clearwater Finishing Co plant. The plant closed over two years ago and the commission took title after a tax sale.
