Aiken City Council Eyes Annexations and Zoning Changes

The Aiken City Council plans first readings to annex 23.7 acres of Pacer Downs owned by the Aiken County Higher Education Commission and zone it R-2. They will also decide on bumper stickers supporting the Savannah River Plant's New Production Reactor and review Foxchase 7 subdivision plans including a 0.32 acre Ruffian Road parcel. The meeting covers zoning of 46.28 acres at Gate Wood to R-1A, a handicapped discrimination grievance process, sprinkler purchases for Citizens Field and Rye Patch, and amending the landscape and tree ordinance to grant council final approving authority. The session is on the second floor of the Municipal Building on Park Avenue.

Senate Speaker to Dedicate Thurmond Statue in Edgefield

Sen Howard Baker R Tenn will speak at a statue dedication for Sen Strom Thurmond in Edgefield South Carolina. The unveiling is set for 3 am October 21 in the town square. Sculptor Maria Kirby Smith based in Edgefield created the statue honoring Thurmond a native of Edgefield and former South Carolina governor now Senate pro tempore. Baker will end his Senate career with this term and is expected to run for president in 1988.

Washington AP reports a New York study finds homosexual men showing different reactions to hormonal stimulation than heterosexuals, suggesting a possible biological distinction though the sample was small and not universally representative. August price surge slows growth in economy

Consumer prices rose 0.5 percent in August the largest monthly gain since April led by vegetable and clothing prices. Analysts call the spike an aberration with inflation expected around 0.3 to 0.4 percent monthly for the rest of the year. Death of Coed Rossi Shocks Columbia Campus

Richland County investigators await a pathologist report in the death of 20 year old University of South Carolina student Barbara Lynn Rossi. The body was found in woods off state route 48 southeast of Columbia and a university search by 25 fraternity members followed a blouse discovery. A missing unidentified woman seen with Rossi before her disappearance is urged to come forward. Police describe the death as a terrible crime but stop short of calling it murder.

Died of carbon monoxide in car in wooded North Augusta area

Autopsies determined a man identified as George C. Beal Jr. and a woman named Betty J. Scriven died from carbon monoxide poisoning inside a car with running air conditioning and windows up.
