United Way of Aiken County hosts the ninth annual Project VISION Day with more than 90 projects. Savannah River Site volunteers, retirees, and senior management join Aiken County employees in community service, building roofs and wheelchair ramps and helping local agencies.

Planners Approve 25 Acre Baseball Complex for USC Aiken
The USC Aiken planning commission approved site plans for a 25 acre baseball complex across Robert M Bell Parkway. Groundbreaking is set for early October with grading on a 50 acre tract for the complex and a future convocation center, part of a $2.5 million project to replace JH Satcher Field by late 2004. Roberto Hernandez donated $1 million toward construction. the stadium will seat 1,000 and include a hall of fame and expanded facilities. The college is about $6 million shy of a 4,000 seat arena and athletic complex, while Golden Horseshoe Estates received conceptual approval for a 47 lot manufactured housing development.

Silver Bluff High School senior Tenise Bell, 17, was named Student of the Month by the Downtown Aiken Rotary Club at a recent meeting. Bell, a top student, plans to attend NC State University, exploring a double major in computer engineering and apparel management. She also participated in NC Business Week at Erskine College and represented Silver Bluff at SCETV gubernatorial candidate forum. The club discussed distributing dictionaries to every third grader in Aiken County and meets Thursdays at Newberry Hall.
