A man named Joseph Jason Zirkel faced sentencing in Columbia for defrauding residents in the late 1980s. He received five years in prison and must pay over $165,000 in restitution. He had pleaded guilty to eight counts of breach of trust with fraudulent intent and is already serving a federal term in Boston.
Glenn Harrell claims Sumter County Sheriff Tommy Mims violated his First Amendment rights and defamed him in a federal suit filed Tuesday. Harrell and his brother Sam were fired last week for owning a videotape showing white men hunting a Black man. Later, Furman University announced a Virginia couple donated 1 million toward a 2.6 million music pavilion, with total gifts at 1.8 million and construction to begin next year, named for Nan a Trammell Herring.

The family now includes one daughter, a granddaughter, and four great grandsons among five great great grandchildren.
The Energy Department says 99 more foreign spent nuclear fuel rods will be shipped to the Savannah River Site by year end. Gov Beasley warned corrosion at the facility risks contamination, while officials say the ships from Switzerland and Greece have intact outer casings. The state has sought a rehearing on storing rods at SRS after a 4th Circuit rejection.
The Aiken County Council voted 5-4 to halve an across the board pay raise for about 600 workers. Chairman Ronnie Young called it the biggest county raise ever, while officials could not estimate total cost. About 200 employees attended in disappointment and pledged political retaliation. Coroner Sue Townsend noted long working hours without pay.
Solicitor Barbara Morgan cited loss of qualified employees to Savannah River Site as a drain on county staff and warned the drain may continue. The council discussed executive session timing after a work session and amended a new pay schedule before final approval by a 5th vote. Jim Baggott moved the amendment as Young noted economic uncertainty.
Amy Gibson led the See You At The Pole observance at South Aiken High School with about 25 students starting at 7 15 am and growing through a 30 minute period. Students from all denominations joined hands to pray for county, school, teachers, and future battles. The event echoed Bible readings including Matthew 21 22 and was part of a nationwide observance with area high schools planning gatherings.
