Rachel Franklin named North Augusta Small Business Person of the Year

Rachel Franklin owner of the Sno Cap Drive In and Carolina Oaks Bed and Breakfast was named Small Business Person of the Year by the North Augusta Chamber of Commerce at the annual Business Expo. Sammy Anderson announced the award noting Franklin transformed a community landmark since buying the Sno Cap in 1996 and expanding local nonprofit support.

Amtrykes Presented to Area Children by Aiken Ambucs

On Tuesday August 23 two local children received Amtrykes from the Aiken Ambucs Club at its August meeting at Wing Stop in Aiken. One bike funding came from Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in North Augusta. Local therapists nominated the recipients to help them ride with neighbors and friends, strengthening muscle tone for neighborhood ambulation.

Budget OK'd for Savannah River Site despite unclear jobs impact

Congress approved funds for Savannah River Site operations next year including money to speed siting of a new tritium production source. Senator Thurmond and Hollings urged rapid development, while an extra $43 million was added to process spent fuel rods and address other hazardous material at SRS.

Batesburg man given probation for dumping wastewater into Little Horse Creek

John Ashley Mabus age 44 of Batesburg received five years probation in federal court for pumping about four million gallons of industrial wastewater from a lagoon into Little Horse Creek during a three day period in January 2008. He and Mabus Construction Co. Inc. were digging a sewer trench at the Clearwater Finishing Industrial Facility when the plume contaminated the creek. Mabus pleaded guilty in May and will serve eight months of probation under home confinement along with a $7500 fine.

Pony Club Fundraiser Details Benefit for Injured Ellen Geddes

The Aiken County Pony Club hosts a fundraiser today from 6 30 p m to 9 30 p m at Pizza Hut Richland Avenue to aid Ellen Geddes after a summer car crash. Silent auction items include a gourmet dinner for four, equine chiropractic care, a Strongid C bucket, a 35 gift certificate, and 100 bushels of oats. Proceeds support Geddes medical expenses. the event is a not for profit 501 c 3 organization.
