Lawyers Seek Fast Ruling on Savannah Dredging Case
Attorneys for both sides urge US District Judge Richard Gergel to rule quickly in a dispute over dredging the Savannah River shipping channel. The Savannah Riverkeeper and environmental groups say a South Carolina pollution permit is required for the $650 million project, citing cadmium dredging and disposal in a SC spoils area. The Georgia Ports Authority seeks deeper channels to accommodate larger ships after the Panama Canal expansion. The Savannah Riverkeeper contends pollutants will affect South Carolina and a permit is needed, while the Corps says it complies with state law via a Clean Water Act certification from the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control.
