A native submerged aquatic plant found in quiet lakes and ponds across the southeast. Leaves are peltate with a mucilaginous surface, making it slippery to handle. Flowers are small, deep red, and alternate as female and male on successive days, with seeds forming underwater. Identification help offered by the A C Moore Herbarium at University of South Carolina.
