Whooping cough vaccine loses effectiveness too fast
New research in the New England Journal of Medicine reports the safer whooping cough vaccine given since the 1990s loses protection rapidly, dropping from about 95 percent to 71 percent within five years. Kaiser researchers note waning immunity explains most cases amid a severe outbreak with over 26 000 cases this year, including 10 000 in children ages 7 to 10. Experts say no replacement vaccine is close to readiness.
