In South Carolina, Democrat Ginny Deerin challenges Secretary of State Mark Hammond over a 183 mile round trip funded by taxpayers. Hammond defends living outside Columbia, noting state law requires a state vehicle for statewide officers and exempts them from reimbursing commutes. Other officials, including Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers, also drive state vehicles with fuel charged to a state card amid records of mileage and taxable income.
