Aiken Committee to Fine Tune City Sign Ordinance

A 12 member citizen committee will refine the sign ordinance after a 90 minute study session with the city council and planning commission. The council unanimously extended a 90 day moratorium on new signs to allow joint work on criteria for sign size location and advertising limits, with charts showing a high traffic business may display a 100 square foot sign.

Radiation Releases At Record Low At Savannah River Site

The Savannah River Site reports a record low radioactive release for 1992 due to limited production. Tritium emissions declined as no reactors operated since 1988, with 156000 curies of tritium and 6000.9 curies of plutonium released to air. Groundwater seepage accounts for most radioactivity entering the groundwater, prompting calls for stronger environmental restoration.

Trash Attests To Makin s Success At Aiken Event

More than 30 000 people attended the two day Aiken s Makin event. June H Murff president of the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce praised the trash cleanup efforts and noted two large city containers were insufficient. The TriDevelopment Center led the cleanup as crafters were reduced by about 50 slots to ease parkway congestion with 295 crafters displaying wares.

Aiken Nearing $6 Million Grant for SRS Towns

Aiken and other towns affected by Savannah River Site downsizing moved closer to $6 million in economic development and worker retraining funds after a House amendment to the 1904 Defense Authorization Bill. Funds would be administered through the Department of Energy, with some set for retraining SRS workers. The exact use of the remaining money and qualifying programs are still to be determined.

SRS downsizing. more tech transfer funds eyed for hydrogen energy

About 100 workers are expected to be laid off later this month due to downsizing at SRS. Temporary and nonextended contract workers have already lost jobs since February. A pair of amendments to the defense authorization bill were approved. One funds four million dollars for technology transfer to commercialize federal lab ideas, and Derrick seeks to dedicate part to a National Center for Hydrogen Energy next to SRS. Engineering work continues on a Savannah River Research Campus adjacent to SRS as hydrogen energy emerges among SRS strengths. The Defense Authorization Bill faces House vote next week then Senate approval.

Modest Gains Continue In Retail Sales

Retail sales rose 0.2 percent in August, part of a five month streak of increases. Consumer prices advanced 0.3 percent, while total seasonally adjusted retail sales reached 173.5 billion dollars, up from July. The pace of gains has slowed but remains the longest run since 1992.
