South Carolina Court Rules on Death Plea and Sentencing

The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that only a judge may impose life or death in a death penalty case after a guilty plea. It overturned Wardell Patterson Jr.’s death sentence for the 1980 armed robbery murder of Fort Mills clerk Ted Graham, citing improper inducement and that sentencing rests with the trial judge. Patterson remains imprisoned pending a new trial.

National magazine The Blood-Horse runs a six page profile on Aiken thoroughbred trainer Buddy Hirsch titled Of Hirsches Horses And The Hall Of Fame. Hirsch was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in August.

North Augusta hosts rally against SCE&G rate hike

About 200 people crowded North Augusta Elementary School to oppose an 18 percent rate increase for SCE&G. Rep. Tom Huff and Steve Hamm urged attendance at tonight’s Public Service Commission hearing in Aiken and argued that bond-driven rate hikes are improper while citing utility spending on advertising, donations, and a recreation area for employees.

Willcox Hotel extension deadline set for Oct 1

Aiken City Council approved a 60 day extension for Willcox Hotel owner Joseph Eways to plan repairs and secure backing. Eways must complete seven safety and site improvements by Oct 1 or face demolition of the Crumbling inn. The Willcox, opened 1897 at Colleton Ave and Chesterfield St, was sued for unsafe conditions in July.

City Alters Zoning Net to Notify on Horse Stables

Aiken City Council amends the zoning ordinance requiring 30 day public notice before horse stables can be built in residential zones. The vote included Frampton Durban Hastings Wyman Steve Surasky Willar Hightower Jr and Mayor H Odell Weeks. Howard M Hickey Jr was absent and Skipper Perry Jr opposed. The meeting also discussed AMVETS bingo license costs and approved information gathering and funds for legal defense and development projects.
