Secretary of State Haig says U S evidence shows lethal chemical weapons used in Southeast Asia with toxins not native to the region. He cites reports of Soviet allied action in Laos Cambodia and Afghanistan and notes prohibition under the Geneva Protocol and Biological Weapons Convention.
William Belk, a former Iranian hostage, reports waking nightmares about his 444 days in captivity. He spoke with the Charlotte Observer from Canberra where he serves as a State Department communications officer. He says the dreams began two weeks ago and replay the ordeal, though he has tried to cope by processing the memories.
Maurice Williams finished third in his age group at the Whiskey Road Race 6.2 mile event hosted by Aiken Recreation Department. Aiken City Council will hold a second reading and public hearing tonight at 7 30 in the Municipal Building council chambers on 214 Park Ave SW for a rezoning of the Willcox Hotel property from R-2 to Central Business District. The move would permit renovation into an office, restaurant and shops. Also on the agenda is a second reading and public hearing on a road cut erosion issue north of Southern Railroad on Rutland Drive. Additional items include first readings to annex Houndstake VII and Forest Heights II lots, housing committee appointment, bids for EDA projects, and updates to housing rehabilitation and coin operated machine ordinances. Public requests include concerns about recorder's court and safety, parking on Greenville Ave NW, use of Giles Park for services, a Laurens Street Christmas tree, and United Way advertising placement.
President Reagan sought to shrink the defense budget a three year plan of 28 to 30 billion in cuts drew Democratic opposition and calls for deeper reductions. Senator Domenici urged about 30 billion in cuts while Stockman Weinberger differed on the level of reductions. Reagan defended the plan noting a 2 billion cut in 1982 and emphasized defense has been underfunded while domestic spending faces restraint.
Dede Biles, a Concord North Carolina native and UNC journalism graduate, is named sports editor of the Aiken Standard. She replaces Greg Pitts who left for the A B Dick Company. Biles previously worked at papers in Kannapolis Anson High Point and Thomasville.
