Thurmond's secret daughter ties surface in archived letters

Columbia reports that letters between U S Senator Strom Thurmond and his biracial daughter Essie Mae Washington Williams, dating to 1946 and many from the 1970s to 1990s, reveal a private ongoing link despite public segregationist stances. The correspondence, archived at Clemson University, shows Williams writing personal notes while Thurmond kept envelopes marked very personal for privacy.

Westminster doctor promotes growing green cemetery movement

Westminster physician Billy Campbell started Ramsey Creek Preserve in 1998 as a nature focused cemetery with biodegradable caskets and minimal headstones. The Turton family chose the site after the stillbirth of Olivia Hope in 1998, seeking a simple, environmental approach to burial. Similar green cemeteries are under development in California, Oregon, Washington, Florida, and Texas with growing pre need interest and watchful public response.

South Carolina National Guard struggles to meet Army and Air Force recruitment targets for the first time since the Iraq War began. Veterans once accounted for about half of recruits now make up roughly 30 percent as deployments pressure retention.

The South Carolina Research Authority paid its top 10 executives about 1.9 million last year including 276,693 for president Larry Druffel who plans retirement within two years.
