Circuit Judge Ernest Kinard Jr. withdrew from a suit examining if telephone cards with scratch-off prizes may be sold at beer and wine outlets. The Carolina Family Alliance filed complaints alleging bias toward gambling operators, naming judges McKellar and Manning. A new judge, Don Beatty, was assigned to hear the case.
A $9.5 million settlement ends a wrongful death suit after Billie Wayne Garrett 67 was crushed by a five ton scoreboard at the North Charleston Coliseum while spreading dirt for World Finals Rodeo. The plaintiffs named Fairtron Inc Electro-Lift Robert Taylor and Sons Charleston Crane and Rigging Ogden Entertainment Inc. and accused mismanagement and unsafe hoist operation. The city owned the venue was not a party to the suit.
