Mixed 201 Plan for Aiken County Faces Funding Controversy

The 201 Facilities Plan for Aiken County and North Augusta remains a 20 year concept with three governing bodies each drafting studies for countywide wastewater. Funding hinges on federal levels with 75 percent grants before October 1984 dropping to 55 and then 25 percent, risking several projects across Aiken and North Augusta.

Sparrows Face Doom From Development and Funding Cuts

The 92 Florida grasshopper sparrows, living in Kissimmee Prairie palmetto scrub, are threatened by land development and a lack of funds to renew protection. Wildlife officials had purchased habitat until Florida lost two thirds of its $450,000 preservation money after James Watt ended federal endangered species grants.
