Washington reports wholesale prices surged 3.9 percent in August, the second largest monthly rise in 28 years. The gain spans nearly all sectors with notable increases from farm products to industrial goods, signaling widespread inflationary pressure.
Detroit AP reports the American-made $3000 car is fading as a relic of the past. American Motors says the 1975 Gremlin will start at a tentative base price of $2800, signaling a tightening in affordable U.S. autos.
In Addis Ababa military reformers pledged democracy and a peasant deal after the 82 year old Emperor Haile Selassie was arrested. An American witness said troops moved the emperor from his palace to the 4th Army Division headquarters at 10:30 a.m. with curfew imposed and Western embassies warning residents to stay indoors.
A Fulton County Superior Court jury found Marcus Wayne Chenault guilty of the June murders of Mrs. Martin Luther King Sr. and an Atlanta church deacon. The verdict concludes a high profile case tied to civil rights era history and church community tragedy in Atlanta.
The Washington Post reports late in Nixon's presidency aides H R Haldeman and John Ehrlichman pressed for pardons. Nixon rejected both requests and resented the tone of the pleas. One source described Haldeman's plea as threatening and akin to blackmail.
The luxury liner Cunard Ambassador burned today in the Gulf of Mexico, prompting most of its 290 crew members to abandon ship. Coast Guard Lt. George Johnson said the fire is in the engine room and serious, with no immediate reports of injuries.

Metro Narcotics Squad arrested eight suspects and seized $150000 in drugs after an eight week probe. Twenty two warrants were issued and two Martinez, Georgia suspects were arrested with assault charges. Additional arrests include Roton, Roton wife, Lander, Seigler and others as the probe continues.
Aiken citizens subcommittee met in City Hall to refine goals for the Aiken Area Transportation Study and design new route options for the S C Highway Department. They propose alternating direction lanes, better CBD access, and a balance between roads and landscaping as input for the transportation master plan.
An Aiken County sterilization case involving Dr Clovis H Pierce and county officials is postponed after a pretrial hearing led by US District Judge Solomon Blatt Jr. The American Civil Liberties Union suits allege two women were sterilized or threatened with it, with further discovery and another hearing planned.
Allied General executive Robert I. Newman disputed the EPA Krypton hazard estimate at an AEC Licensing Board hearing. Newman cited a projected 100 fatalities over 30 years and a $300 million recovery program, calling the EPA link to skin cancer insupportable.
Charles F. McDonald a former circulation manager for the Aiken Standard was among three Charleston newspaper executives killed in the Eastern Airlines crash in Charlotte. McDonald had long served in newspaper circulation roles and led reorganization efforts in Aiken before rising to roles at The News and Courier and Charleston Evening Post. He served in the US Marine Corps during Korea and was named Man of the Year by the Charleston Exchange Club in June. He is survived by his wife Alice Shea McDonald and four children.
