Katrina Evacuees Find Welcome at St John’s Shelter
In a quiet Friday noon visit, 65 year old Robert Woods and his 85 year old mother Bessie Hawkins joined 16 Katrina evacuees from New Orleans at St John’s United Methodist Church in Aiken. The church had transformed its gym into a shelter with cots, beds, clothes and warm meals. Neil Flowers and church staffers recalled a labor intensive effort to ready the space during the Labor Day week, aiming to shelter about 50 evacuees, then organizing a convoy to Louisiana after learning of 35 people at an arena near Shreveport.
