Clinton and Barak seek progress as world leaders depart
At the Millennium Summit in New York, President Clinton met with Israeli Prime Minister Barak to salvage Middle East talks as more than 150 leaders headed home. Barak indicated no shift in Arafat’s stance while second-tier talks planned. Gaza lawmakers debated a unilateral statehood move. The summit approved a sweeping Millennium Declaration, pledging to educate every child and cut disease by 2015, amid calls to curb poverty and debt.
