A 35 year old Aiken man Calvin Johnson pleaded guilty to assault and battery with intent to kill for slitting a man's throat in March 2007. He received a negotiated 12 year sentence with 85 percent to serve. The start was delayed due to an indictment naming the wrong victim.
Mark Fulmer of Sarahsetter Kennels suffered a migratory disc fragment injury while separating two fighting dogs. Confined to bed and then an electric wheelchair, he trained several dogs from the chair. Surgery occurred August 29 with a hopeful two month recovery and plans to write a book. A Sarahsetter Fund at Citizens First Bank accepts donations.
The 2008 Aiken's Makin' arts and crafts fair drew an estimated 38,000 visitors over the weekend. The event expanded to downtown parkways to accommodate growth and now attracts juried artisans from South Carolina and adjacent states, with organizers aiming for higher quality over size.
