Congress likely to miss 1999 spending bill deadline
The Associated Press reports Congress will probably miss the Oct. 1 deadline to pass 13 FY1999 spending bills. Lawmakers consider a short term funding measure through Oct. 7 to avoid a government shutdown while negotiating with President Clinton. Senators Stevens and Lott and Rep. Livingston foresee a temporary bill as necessary. Clinton has threatened vetoes on seven bills including funds for the 2000 census and school repairs.
