Scores from local prep games show South Aiken and North Augusta in close action. Ridge Spring Monetta and McCormick trailed early while Wagener Salley posted a 12 point win. Williston Elko defeated St George with a strong 47 to 0 showing as Sloan and Opiates struggled.
A Wilkes-Barre jury found Larry and Leona Cottam guilty of third degree murder for starvations in a case where the family went without food for six weeks. They were saving nearly $4,000 for "God" while their son Eric died January 3 after no food since November 22. They were also convicted on two counts each of reckless endangerment and welfare of children.
A Convair 440 charter plane carrying Norwegian shipping officials crashed in the Skagerrak Strait en route from Oslo to Hamburg, killing all 55 aboard. Rescue teams recovered 32 bodies as helicopters and about 30 vessels searched for others.

Federal inspectors under Energy Secretary James D. Watkins will visit 17 major weapons plants in Tennessee Texas and Ohio over five weeks to check environmental and safety rule adherence. The plan includes Pantex Amarillo Oak Ridge Y-12 and Mound Dayton facilities as part of broader efforts to address safety concerns and reassure Congress.
Former President Reagan underwent a successful hour long operation at St Marys Hospital in Rochester to remove fluid on the brain caused by a riding accident in July. Mayo Clinic surgeons performed the procedure with general anesthesia and no complications. Reagan is conscious improving in his room and will be monitored before any decision on discharge.
Frank Manter 70 and Ralph Pekkala 73 lead volunteers in a local literacy program by the Aiken County Literacy Council. Manter, a Brown University graduate and WWII Navy veteran, tutors weekly at the Adult Education Center on Jones Street, finding joy in helping learners read. Pekkala, a retired Di i employee at Savannah River Site, began tutoring in 1987 and is praised as a strong leader in the effort to increase literacy.
Palmetto Federal stock jumped from 16 to 17.25 dollars as 61,100 shares traded amid renewed speculation that First Union of Charlotte may acquire the Aiken based bank. A Robinson Humphrey spokesman called it the highest volume day in a long time. No official comments from Palmetto Federal or First Union have been made.
Aiken County Public Schools say public education is not truly free as state funding falls short. Administrative intern James Gallman notes supplies and equipment must be financed by fees from parents to cover yearly costs.
