American helicopters ferried 1,000 fresh South Vietnamese troops within two miles of the Laotian border in a major drive below the demilitarized zone. Gales and storm tides menaced the Texas coast with 90 mph Hurricane Fern in the Caribbean. Edith, a 160 mph hurricane, neared Honduras and Nicaragua as officials warned storms could threaten additional coastlines. Edith was 80 miles northeast of Puerto Cabezas at 10 a.m. local time.
Georgia Power Co announced plans to build a $600 million nuclear power plant on the Savannah River in Burke County. The project, Georgia’s second and largest, would sit 15 miles east of Waynesboro and 30 miles south of Aiken with a 2 GW unit and 350 MW oil-fired generators. Construction could start in 1973 with output by 1978 and 1,500 jobs created.
