Backyard volunteers track firefly numbers nationwide
INDIANAPOLIS Backyard volunteers help monitor firefly numbers through the Firefly Watch program. About 700 volunteers, including Helen Mester of South Bend, Ind., entered observations from yards and parks to study range, light patterns, and possible declines. Massachusetts researchers and Tufts assist, aiming to show where declines occur and why, as urban sprawl and light pollution affect mating signals and habitats.
