Aiken Standard marks the anniversary of September 11 with a special edition titled Inside Aiken Remembers 9/11. The issue collects local reflections, stories, and memories from residents commemorating where America stood still on that day.
The 25th Whiskey Road Race drew top finishes from Aiken North Augusta Pelion and Augusta. Matt Daniels 82 won the 10k in 35 50 while Pelion teen Diana Willard 15 led women at sx 08. Masters winner David Allison 42 posted 38 31 and Sohaila Rothermel 44 took top master honors with 45 40.
The FCC has until Sept. 18 to decide if BellSouth can offer long distance in South Carolina and four other states. BellSouth argues entry will lower rates and boost competition against more than 70 firms in an $800 million market. A grease fire gutted a house at 112 Hidden Pond Road Saturday near 5 p.m. Grady and Barbara Roe lost their residence but no injuries were reported as Couchton Fire and Rescue and neighboring agencies quickly contained the blaze. Firefighter Chris Eady said the station is close by.
James Red Roberts of United Energy pursues a dream in Montmorenci by converting a former kaolin storage site into an alternative fuel plant. Biodiesel and E85 are sold at a retail site on Toolebeck Road. The venture plans 30 new high tech jobs as the soy bean extraction plant becomes fully operational. Roberts argues for reduced foreign crude dependence as market prices fluctuate.
