SREENVILLE AP Gov. Beasley undecided on endorsing Henry McMaster for GOP chairman fueling talk he may seek to replace McMaster. Will McCain Beasley’s chief of staff says the governor is not committed to any single candidate. State Republicans choose officers at the May 1996 state convention.
The South Carolina Aquarium earned a $500,000 grant from the Turner Foundation to fund the Discovery Lab. The lab will be a 65 foot counter top display space with wet and dry areas for specimens and equipment. Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. praised Ted Turner for his environmental interest and support for the Lowcountry and the aquarium.
BUCK HILL AP The state Higher Education Commission approved a plan to overhaul fragmented adult education by centralizing programs within the technical college system. The 18 member board, at Winthrop University, supported moving adult education from local school districts to the technical college system to better serve adults seeking literacy or a high school diploma.
James W. Jim Whitehurst died recently and is remembered in Aiken obituary notices on page 2B. The report lists his contributions and surviving relatives as part of the community tribute.
Traffic flow changes to aid safety for weekend visitors as Aiken's Makin' festival attracts 300 crafters and 30 food vendors. Parkways along Park Avenue Laurens Street and Newberry Street host a bustling tent city with streets closed by the Aiken Department of Public Safety to improve safety and parking.
Capt. Pete Frommer of ADPS says closed sections on Laurens and Newberry streets at Park Avenue will limit northbound local traffic. Chesterfield Street remains open to through traffic but pairs with Park Avenue parkways, advising avoidance of the intersection. Southbound 19 detours flow via Richland Avenue to Chesterfield Street. The Department of Energy proposes a New Necessary and Sufficient Standards program to cut bureaucracy in hazardous waste cleanup. DOE aims to tailor standards to facilities like the Savannah River Site to reduce cost while maintaining safety. A pilot is under way in the F area groundwater remediation with a water purification station.
