Beech Island Fire Chief Richie Caudill has returned home from helping with hurricane relief. He brings stories and pictures of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
Tristen Bland spent a day with sixth graders at St. Mary Help of Christians Church School. She is a special guest from Hammond Louisiana staying with her aunt and uncle in Aiken after their area escaped flooding while her family endured the hurricane with no power and limited contact.
The NAACP advocates voting for the at large Aiken City Council race while not endorsing candidates. David Walker notes broad participation. Jane Vaughters and Rocky Napier unable to attend. Candidates Kay Biermann Brohl and Don Wells urge inclusive representation and discuss plans like a recreation park on a former landfill.
The last day to cast an absentee ballot is Monday Sept 12 at 5 pm. In person voting is at the Aiken County Registration and Elections office 916 Vaucluse Road. Voters may select two of four candidates Kay Biermann Brohl Rocky Napier Jane Vaughters and Don Wells for two at large seats.
St John s United Methodist Church in Aiken prepared its gym as a shelter during Labor Day weekend and received Red Cross training for evacuee intake. Officials said evacuees could stay three to five months with FEMA social services and potential housing and employment opportunities.
Aiken officials prepare downtown for the weekend festival with 302 vendor spaces across 49 new booths at Gyles Park. Helen Still and Charlie Weiss organize parkways for clearer vendor flow as artisans from near and far set up. The event features local crafts, Rickey Godfrey band performances, and trolley rides offering a bird’s eye view of historic downtown.
