Fort Mill Middle School art teacher Amy Dean won a $2,000 award to revamp and expand a sixth grade Japanese rock garden started last year outside the classroom. She envisions a courtyard pond stream cherry blossoms monarch bushes and a retreat that engages teachers and students district wide using Haiku and garden design lessons.
Kaaren Mann and about 60 students from the University of South Carolina and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill travel to Washington to launch National Fire Campus Safety Month. They honor Lauren Mahon and six other students who died in October in Ocean Isle Beach. The group aims to raise campus fire safety awareness and prevent future tragedies.
The U S Justice Department awards six SC law enforcement agencies 2 25 million to hire new officers. Grants cover up to 75 percent of salaries and benefits for three years with a 75 000 cap per officer. Florence Myrtle Beach and Spartanburg police get 225 000 each for three posts. Richland and Spartanburg sheriff s offices receive 750 000 each for ten positions.
