Study finds 53000 SC jobs lost to overseas competition

South Carolina has shed more than 53 000 jobs since 1994 as firms shift work overseas or face cheaper imports. The state reports a 3 percent overseas job loss rate higher than most states. The federal Trade Adjustment Assistance program has funneled about $100 million to SC since 1993, but only about a third of eligible workers sign up. Many avoid the program to keep health insurance or due to age and retraining concerns.
