Southern Bell seeks 12 percent rate hike in SC

Southern Bell Telephone Co. asked the South Carolina Public Service Commission for a 12 percent rate increase totaling 39.6 million dollars to take effect Oct. 4. Harry Marsh cited inflation eroding earnings and noted only two prior small rises in five years while full revenue needs suggest 66.4 million. Residential dial service would rise 2.05, business line 4.50, and connection charges would increase with options to save 20.25 by self-installation.

Unemployment Drops as Food Prices Surge in August

The Labor Department reports the unemployment rate falling to 7.6 percent in August while wholesale food prices jump 4.4 percent the largest rise in seven years. Nonfood producer prices rise 0.7 percent with manufacturing jobs up 200,000 and the average work week up 30 minutes.

Aiken TEC anticipates 1500 students this term

Aiken Technical College plans a fall term with about 1,500 enrolled students. Prospective students should apply at the Office of Student Services with Gloria Busch Johnson as dean. Registration for new students is scheduled for September 8 and 9 with varied hours. Tuition is 140 dollars per quarter full time plus a 10 dollar registration fee. part time is 12 dollars per credit hour. Financial aid is available.
