The August unemployment rate remained at 8.4 percent while the number of employed Americans increased sharply. The Labor Department reported continued job growth for the fifth consecutive month as factories recalled workers laid off during the recession.
A bomb exploded in the Hilton Hotel lobby near Buckingham Palace at lunch, killing three and seriously injuring 38. A suspected second device was found and later demolished. An anonymous Irish caller warned 10 minutes before the blast. The 28 story hotel faced Hyde Park near the American Embassy with 700 guests.
Beirut reports say a group of officers attempted to oust Sudanese President Jaafar al-Numeiry but loyal forces routed the rebellion within two hours. The army commander Bashir Mohammed Ali said the rebels were defeated. reports in London claimed coup leader Hassan Hussein Osman was killed.
President Ford said Congress will approve the Sinai truce pact and support the gamble for peace. He warned at a Portland fund raiser that opposition is not threatening the agreement and that war in six to eight months would be the alternative.
London reports that Protestant and Catholic leaders in Northern Ireland are close to forming an emergency coalition government to avert all-out civil war. After five months without progress at Stormont Castle, the 78 member constitutional convention is pressed by violence toward a stop gap power-sharing arrangement.
The forecast calls for continued heat with partly cloudy skies today and tomorrow. Highs reach the upper 90s with overnight lows in the upper 60s. Rain chances are 20 percent today, 10 percent tonight, and 30 percent tomorrow, with an extended outlook of warm, partly cloudy conditions and scattered showers from Monday.

Keith David Jones died in a 1974 car crash near Columbia. His parents donated Misty the Amur leopard to Riverbanks Zoo as a living memorial, along with two Victoria Crown pigeons, and plan to keep Misty for breeding alongside Barron.
