The Federal Reserve increases the discount rate from 5.5 percent to 6 percent effective immediately in a move seen as a hard stance against inflation. The change follows Greenspan’s leadership and could push up mortgage and other rates in coming weeks.

U S unemployment stays at 6 percent as the Labor Department reports 354,000 more Americans working in August bringing total employed to 113 million. Jobless numbers fall slightly to 7.221 million while the labor force expands about 350,000. The August gain is driven by service sectors with fitness in business and health services and finance real estate sectors, offset by declines in retail and manufacturing. Auto employment rises 20,000 offset by clothing and textiles losses. Oil and gas recoveries add 4,000 jobs.
