Four Aiken County men face charges for three break-ins and two thefts since July 29. Hicks Hall Meegan and Price are tied to the Park Avenue, Richland Avenue, and Palmetto Golf Club incidents with housebreaking and grand larceny counts.
NASA reports a detachable ice block from Discovery was dislodged during a cargo bay maneuver. Crew member Judy Resnik and commander Henry Hartsfield aided extraction, leaving a smaller, nonhazardous ice fragment on the port side. Temperature readings monitored the remaining ice as mission control described it as porous and soft.
Preliminary tests from about 400 samples show low level radiation effects in the environment from the largest accidental Tritium oxide release at the Savannah River Plant. Officials say effects are ap parent but not harmful, with full results due midweek.
Aiken's Makin' showcases local arts and crafts Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. along Park Avenue from Laurens to Chesterfield streets. Virginia Lybrand, co chairwoman, says there is something for every taste. The Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce sponsors the annual event highlighting products from Aiken County.
Aiken's Makin' section will appear in the Aiken Standard tomorrow with a map of booths and displays. Downtown merchants plan sidewalk sales Friday in conjunction with the festival. The event features 160 craftspeople from South Carolina and nearby states, with items ranging from lead Civil War soldiers to on the spot portraits and quilts.
