City of Aiken progressive Alley renovation phases announced

The Alley remains open as construction cones mark ongoing work. City leaders led by Pearce Atkins outline a three phase plan to beautify The Alley including trees underground wiring and better access for merchants. Phase 1 runs from Laurens Street to Bee Lane with Phase 2 Bee Lane and Phase 3 from Bee Lane to Newberry Street.

The Alley in downtown Aiken is undergoing a multi month facelift with sidewalks kept for pedestrian traffic. Officials say access to businesses will be maintained and work will avoid peak hours to minimize impact.

Gov. Nikki Haley told the National Press Club that South Carolina shows progress comes from listening not shouting. She linked deaths of unarmed black men countrywide to a Black Lives Matter movement that she said has damaged Ferguson and Baltimore. She praised SC for handling riots differently and noted black residents face terror when police are deterred from acting.
