Foster parents dig deep into their pockets for care
Foster parents across South Carolina face smaller payments from the Department of Social Services after budget cuts. About 2,000 licensed foster families caring for nearly 5,000 children lost $20 monthly, with new rates set at 812 for under five, 339 for ages 6 to 19, and 415 for 18 plus. DSS cited a $30 million cut over 2002 to 2008 as the driver. advocates say parents remain committed to avoiding service gaps.
